Fast Weight Loss

By Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, ND, DACBN, DABFM

Here’s a look at some of the most common diets people are using. I personally do not recommend or endorse any of the following diet plans. I recommend the “Bio-Rhythm Diet Plan” outlined in the “Weight Loss Secrets Revealed” E-book at www.weightlossobesity.com.

The Atkins Diet

The Atkins diet is based on high protein, low-carbohydrate fare. It allows all of the meat and vegetables you want with no restrictions on fats. Fruits are kept to a minimum. Bread, pasta, and other grain products are restricted. Many people have had weight loss success on the Atkins’ Diet because it offers many delicious food options. However, it can be high in fat, possible harmful over long periods of time and low in fiber and calcium.

The Carbohydrate Addict’s Diet

This is another reduced carbohydrate diet that allows meats, dairy, vegetables, fruits, and grain products, but restricts all other carbohydrates. It tends to be quite high in fat and saturated fat.

The Choose to Lose Diet

This is a low fat diet that allows you to eat from all of the major food groups. You are only restricted by a “fat budget” that you choose how to spend. Carbohydrates are allowed, as well as lean meat, poultry, seafood, fruits, vegetables, bread and pasta. The Choose to Lose Diet allows an ample amount of fruits and vegetables and it is low in saturated fat and it provides a fairly healthy eating plan for fast weight loss.

The DASH Diet

The DASH diet allows for a high carbohydrate intake, with moderate amounts of fat and protein. It was originally designed as a low-pressure diet. The DASH diet follows the principles of the Food Pyramid, but it suggests more servings of fruits and vegetables (up to nine daily,) and more dairy servings (two to three daily servings of low fat or nonfat dairy.) The DASH diet may require too much food for most people to see weight loss results.

The Eat More Weigh Less Diet

This diet is an extremely low-fat diet that focuses on vegetarian fare. It allows fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, egg whites, and some nonfat dairy products. This is a very restricted diet that limits even healthy foods like lean organic meats, poultry, and low-fat dairy products. This diet is great for vegetarians, but it is low in calcium, and it may be too difficult for most people to follow long enough to see weight loss results.

The Eat Right For Your Blood Type Diet

This diet plan bases you food choices on your blood type. For example, those with Type O blood follow an eating plan that includes lots of meat. Some of the “blood type” diets in this plan are too restricted in calories and they may be poor in nutritional balance. Little proof is offered on basis of the diet, that blood type should affect dietary choices.

The Pritkin Principle Diet

This diet focuses on restricting calories and eating more “watery” foods that fill you up quicker. (It follows the same principle that suggests you should drink a full glass of water before each meal to make your stomach feel full faster. It allows fruits, vegetables, pasta, oatmeal, soups, salads, and low-fat dairy, but limits protein sources to lean meats, poultry and seafood. This is a low-fat diet that offers plenty of fruits and vegetables, but it can be low in calcium.

The Protein Power Diet

This is a very high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. It allows for lots of meats and fats but limits that consumption of fruits and vegetables. This is a very restrictive diet that limits healthy foods like whole grains and beans. It is very high in fat, especially saturated fat and it is very low in calcium.

Power Busters

This is a low-carbohydrate diet that is high in fat and protein. Fruits and grain products are forbidden, but high-fat meats and dairy products are allowed. Like many other low-carb diets, the Power Busters diet is high in fat, high in saturated fat, and low in calcium.

Volumetrics

The Volumetrics diet is a restricted calorie diet that allows fruits, vegetables, pasta, oatmeal, soups, salads, lean meats, poultry, seafood and dairy. High fat food and “dry” foods like crackers, pretzels, and popcorn are restricted. It is low in saturated fat and provides an ample amount of fruits and vegetables..

Weight Watchers

This diet does not restrict followers to a set meal plan. Dieters are able to plan their own diet every day following a point system that allows the dieter to spend a certain “allowance” in each category. This diet allows moderate fat and protein intake and high carbohydrate consumption. Generally, vegetables and whole grain products have the lowest point value and high fat foods “cost” the most amount of points.

The Zone

This diet is moderately high in protein and low in carbohydrates. It allows low fat foods like chicken and fish and plenty of fruits and vegetables. But whole grains are restricted. This is a healthy eating plan, although it is low in calcium.

Prescription Weight Loss Drugs

By Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, ND, DACBN, DABFM

Every now and again, you may run across a person with a knockout figure who claims to eat whatever he or she wants. Some people are blessed with a high metabolism or an apathetic interest in food, that keeps them slim and trim throughout their lives. But these people are few and far between. For the rest of us, there has usually been at least one occasion in our lives when we have had to consider making major life changes to lose weight.

Diet and exercise is usually the weight loss path of choice recommended by most physicians and health care authorities. But what if diet and exercise aren’t enough? For some people, weight loss is extremely difficult. There are a number of FDA approved prescription weight loss drugs that can be harmful.

How Do Weight Loss Drugs Work?

Most weight loss drugs work by suppressing the appetite (not good). One exception to this the weight loss medication Xenical (orlistat.) Xenical is a newer medication approved by the FDA in 1999. It works by inhibiting the enzyme lipase. Lipase breaks down dietary fat for use in the body. When the function of lipase is interfered with, it decreased dietary fat absorption by thirty percent. Because the undigested fats are not absorbed, fewer calories enter the bloodstream, and the dieter may begin to lose weight. The problem with this is you are shutting down one of the bodies most important functions – To produce enzymes. We do not recommend this product for weight loss. We suggest a natural substitute such as Slimirex® found at www.slimirex.com.

Appetite Suppressants

Appetite suppressants are used for the short-term treatment of obesity. Their appetite suppressing effects usually diminish after a few weeks, so they are not designed for long-term use. But they are really not a good way to jump start weight loss. The dieter should develop a new exercise and dietary regime. Long-term results are dependent upon changes in eating habits and activity levels. Appetite suppressants include sibutramine (Merida,) diethylpropion (Tenuate), and Phentermine (Adipex-P). Common side effects of appetite suppressants include dry mouth, dizziness, drowsiness, restlessness, depression, and increased blood pressure. They are also linked to the development of heart and lung problems. Check with your doctor immediately if you experience chest pain, fast or irregular heart beat, blurred vision, heart palpitations, or difficulty breathing.

Merida (Sibutramine): Merida was approved by the FDA in 1997. It works by increasing certain chemicals in the brain that help to reduce appetite. One possible side effect of the weight loss drug, is that is may increase blood pressure and heart rate. Therefore, it should not be taken by people who have uncontrolled high blood, or a history of heart disease, congestive heart failure, irregular heartbeat, or stroke. Other side effects of this medication include headache, constipation, dry mouth, and insomnia.

Adipex-P (Phentermine): Other trade names for this medication include Anoxine-AM, Fastin, Ionamin, Obephen, Obermine, Obestin-30, and Phentrol. Phentermine is a weight loss drug that is used in combination with diet and exercise to reduce the appetite and assist in weight loss. Common side effects of this medication include dry mouth, unpleasant taste, diarrhea, constipation, nausea and vomiting. These side effects may be lessened by taking phentermine with food. Call you doctor immediately if you experience increased blood pressure, heart palpitations, dizziness, or restlessness.

Tenuate (Diethylpropion): Also referred to by the trade name Tenuate Dospan, this medication should not be used for weight loss. This medication may become habit forming. Side effects include dry mouth, depression, tremors, anxiety, upset stomach, vomiting, and increased urination. Call you doctor immediately if you experience cardiovascular changes, blurred vision, skin rashes, or a fever.

Lipase Inhibitors

As mentioned above, orlistat (Xenical) works by decreasing fat absorption within the body. Orlistat is a lipase inhibitor that works in your intestines to block ingested fat from being absorbed in the system. Orlistat is used in obese or overweight patients. Consuming too many fats at one sitting could result in an increase in side effects. Common side effects of this weight loss drug include changes in bowel movements, gas, abdominal bloating, stomach pain, and irregular menstrual periods. Call your health care professional immediately if you experience itching, swelling, chest pain, skin rashes, difficulty breathing, or a fever.

Weight Loss Surgery

By Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, ND, DACBN, DABFM

Weight loss surgery as a last resort can successfully help severely overweight or obese people lose excess weight. There are several different types of weight loss surgeries to choose from. Consult your health care provider to discuss whether or not you make a good candidate for weight loss surgery, and which procedure would work best for you. Natural methods always work the best.

How Does Weight Loss Surgery Work?

There are two basic types of weight loss surgery that are currently used for weight reduction. Restrictive procedures work by decreasing food intake. Malabsorptive procedures, on the other hand, alter digestion, and cause food to be poorly digested and incompletely absorbed so that it is eliminated in the stool.

Restrictive Procedures:

Restrictive weight loss surgery works by altering the size of the stomach, to reduce the amount of food that can be consumed at one time. It does not, however, interfere with the normal absorption or digestion of food. A restrictive weight loss surgery involves the creation of a small stomach pouch in the upper portion of the stomach. The capacity of this pouch is about one half to one ounce. The pouch then connects to the rest of the stomach through an outlet known as a “stoma.” The reduced stomach capacity allows the patient to feel fuller with less food, and by decreasing overall food intake, the patient can achieve sustained weight loss. The success of this weight loss surgery ultimately depends upon the ability of the patient to alter his or her eating habits. After surgery, it is likely that the patient will only be able to consume a maximum of one half cup full of food at each sitting. Compliance with these requirements is necessary to avoid stretching the pouch and defeating the purpose of the surgery.

  • Vertical Banded Gastroplasty: This is restrictive weight loss surgery in which the upper stomach near the esophagus is stapled vertically for about 2-1/2 inches to create a smaller stomach pouch. The outlet or stoma that connects to the rest of the stomach is restricted by a band or ring that slows the emptying of the food and allows the patient to feel fuller with less food consumption. After 10 years, studies show that patients can maintain at least fifty percent of targeted excess weight loss.
  • Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding: This restrictive weight loss surgery, also called stomach banding, utilizes a band to divide the stomach into two portions. The band is placed around the upper most part of the stomach, dividing the stomach into a small upper portion and a larger lower portion. Because food is regulated, most patients feel full faster. Food digestion occurs through the normal digestive process. This surgery can be reversed as the band can easily be removed from the stomach. As with other weight loss surgeries, the success of this procedure is dependant on the compliance of the patient with a restricted diet and the development of an exercise regime.

Malabsorptive Procedures:

Weight loss surgeries that alter the digestive process are referred to as malabsorptive procedures. There are several different types of malabsorptive weight loss surgery. Some of these techniques involve a bypass of the small intestine, thereby limiting the absorption of calories. Malabsorptive weight loss surgery reduces the amount of intestine that comes in contact with food so that the body absorbs fewer calories.

  • Biliopancreatic Diversion: The goal of this surgery is to restrict the amount of food consumed and alter the normal digestive processes. It also involves the creation of a stomach pouch, but it is a larger pouch than one created in a restrictive weight loss surgery. Biliopancreatic diversion alters the anatomy of the small intestine to divert the bile and pancreatic juices so they meet the ingested food closer to the middle or the end of the small intestine. Patients report a greater degree of satisfaction with this procedure than with restrictive weight loss surgery, because they are able to eat larger meals. And this surgery provides the greatest amount of malabsorption, it also allows for the greatest amount of weight loss. But as with restrictive weight loss surgery, long-term success is dependent upon the patient’s ability to adhere to a dietary, supplement, exercise and behavioral regimen.

Combined Procedures:

  • Gastric Bypass Roux-en-Y is a recently developed procedure that utilizes the principles of both restrictive and malabsorptive weight loss surgeries. According to the American Society for Bariatric Surgery and the National Institutes of Health, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is the most frequently performed weight loss surgery in the United States. This procedure involves the creation of a small stomach pouch with the remainder of the stomach completely stapled shut and divided from the pouch. The outlet from the pouch than empties directly into the lower portion of the jejunum, thus bypassing calorie absorption. By adding malabsorption to a restrictive weight loss procedure, food is delayed in mixing with bile and pancreatic juices that aid in the absorption of nutrients. The result is an early sense of fullness, combined with a sense of satisfaction that reduces the desire to eat.

Weight Loss Program

By Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, ND, DACBN, DABFM

Losing weight is the hardest thing that many people will ever do. And regardless of what the TV commercials and magazine articles would have you believe, there is no shortcut. That’s the bad news. But here’s the good news, losing weight can be fun and fulfilling. You can enjoy your life to the fullest by making a few simple changes that will not only help you lose weight, they will strengthen the immune system, reduce fatigue, lessen the side effects of certain medications, prevent constipation and other digestive disorders, and maintain the chemical balance within the body. It’s as simple as eating delicious wholesome foods and making exercise an enjoyable part of your day! Are you ready to make a few small changes that will lead to big results? Read on to learn about the only weight loss program you will ever need for permanent weight loss. We do recommend taking the product Slimirex® with all weight management programs.

Eat and Chew!!

Improving your diet does not mean starving yourself or eating tasteless, boring foods. It just means that you need to be smarter about the food choices you make. You don’t need tricks and gimmicks to help you lose weight. You need to learn the basics of nutrition and put what you learn into action on your dinner plate. That can be the hardest part of a weight loss program: translating words into meals! But the most important thing to remember about a healthy diet is that YOU SHOULD NOT BE HUNGRY. If you feel truly hungry (and not just bored) it is your body’s way of telling you that it needs food to keep going.

If you are hungry, EAT and Chew! Regular meals throughout the day help you stay full and in control of the foods you eat. Aim for five or six small meals to keep you going throughout the day. And when you have time, eat slowly and chew each bite of food 25x before you swallow. This gives you more time to enjoy your meal and allows you brain to signal your tummy when it’s full. If you want to lose weight and keep it off for good, follow a nutritious eating plan that keeps you feeling full and in control.

Make It Delicious!

The best way to ensure you stick with a healthy diet is to plan your meals and snacks so that they include foods you actually want to eat. You will never stick with a plan that forces you to eat tasteless, boring food. What’s the point of living if you can’t enjoy your food? If you want to lose weight you just need to be more selective about the foods you are choosing to satisfy your hunger. There are thousands of recipes in books and online that can offer delicious organic nutritious meals that fit well with a weight loss program. The key is to plan ahead to make sure that you have the time, energy, and ingredients to prepare these meals. It’s not always easy. And there will be days when you simply cannot make it happen. But if you make the effort 95% of the time, you will still be able to achieve the goals of your weight loss program.

Make your Weight Loss Program Interesting!

They say variety is the spice of life. It is certainly the key to a good diet and a successful weight loss program. Keep your meal plan interesting by trying to eat a range of different selections. Remember, your body needs over forty different vitamins, minerals, and nutrients on a daily basis just to grow and function. Adding variety to your diet will help you meet these goals. I recommend the diet in the book “Weight Loss Secrets Revealed” available at www.weightlossobesity.com.

Make Exercise A Part Of Your Day!

Is it possible to look forward to a day that you know will include exercise? The answer is yes. Exercise does not and should not be boring or painful, but it should be a part of your day. If you hate to exercise, don’t be discouraged. There are plenty of ways to make exercise fun with your new weight loss program. Enlist the help of a friend to exercise with; this will keep you motivated and help you look forward to your workout. If you’re busy and find too difficult to work exercise into your day, try breaking into fifteen-minute blocks. Research shows that three 15-minute workouts throughout the day can be just as effective as one 45-minute workout.

Remember: Weight loss programs are not easy. If it were, we would all weigh our ideal weight and runway models would seem passé. But following a simple and easy to follow weight loss program can help you stay committed to your health and accomplish your weight loss goals. Stay connected with family and friends who can support you in you program and help you stay on track

Quick Weight Loss

By Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, ND, DACBN, DABFM

There are thousands of diet book and diet gurus offering a myriad of ideas for quick weight loss. Although some of these plans may provide short-term results, gimmicks and gadgets do not add up to a permanent weight loss solution. The quickest way to lose weight is to have patience, eat healthy, use a weight management supplement such as Slimirex®, and incorporate a exercise plan into your daily activities.

Eat Healthy

The body needs over forty different vitamins and minerals each day in order to function properly and maintain overall good health. Eating healthy not only allows you to control your portions and lose weight, but it also helps ensure that you get the nutrients your body needs to stay strong. Many people think that eating healthy means skipping meals and eating mostly bland, tasteless foods. But this is not true. Healthy eating simply means following two basic steps: variety and moderation.

  • Variety: A healthy diet is a well-balanced one, and one that supplies ample amounts of raw fruits, vegetables, whole grains and protein. Eating a variety of foods ensures that you get a good dose of the many different nutrients your body needs, and it keeps your diet interesting and easier to follow. There are so many wonderful foods to choose from that it seems silly for dieters to limit themselves to low-fat cottage cheese and broccoli. Try to range from different fruits, veggies, beans, grains, range fed organic poultry, seafood, and range fed organic meats, to make your diet delicious and nutritious.
  • Moderation: Moderating the foods you eat every day is a critical step to weight loss. It does not mean you should starve yourself or even go hungry. But it does mean that you should control the size of the portions you choose to eat. Eating several smaller meals throughout the day (breakfast, mid morning snack ,lunch, mid afternoon snack and dinner)will help your stomach feel fuller with less food and it will ensure that you are never hungry. It’s also important to remember that there are no particularly bad foods, but there are foods that you should eat or drink in smaller amounts than others.

Increase Metabolism

Eating raw fruit only for breakfast is the best way to fuel your body and increase your metabolism. Skipping breakfast or eating breakfast later in the morning will force your metabolism to slow down until the system receives some fuel. You can also increase your metabolism by eating four to six smaller meals throughout the day to keep the body going. Don’t try to starve yourself or ignore your hunger, as this will slow down your metabolism in a hurry. If you feel hungry, your body is trying to tell you that it needs food to recharge. Energy foods such as whole grains, beans, fruits and vegetables stimulate the metabolism faster than high fat or high protein foods. Also, incorporate exercise into your day to rev up your metabolism. In addition to a simple workout routine, you can park further away from your office or the grocery store, and walk the distance. Take your dog for a walk when you get home. Use the stairs instead of the elevator whenever possible, and do more activities around the house to burn calories and increase your metabolism. Also, be sure to chew every bite of food at least 25 times before swallowing.

Exercise

Daily exercise is an essential component in achieving quick weight loss results. Exercise stimulates the metabolism and helps to burn calories. Long-term studies have shown that people who have lost weight and kept it off for the long-term, have found a way to incorporate exercise into their daily activities. Different exercises are better for different people, and some burn more calories than others. Here’s a look at some common exercise routines and the calories they burn per hour. Choose an exercise routine that works best for you and try a few different exercises each week for the quickest weight loss results.

Bicycling (6mph) 240
Bicycling (12mph) 410
Running (5.5mph) 740
Running (7mph) 920
Jumping Rope 500
Swimming (25yds/minute) 275
Swimming (50yds/minute) 500
Tennis 400
Walking (2mph) 240
Walking (3mph) 320

Quick Weight Loss Tips

  • Don’t focus on pounds as much as you focus on eating sensibly. Weigh yourself once a week to keep track of your progress, but don’t go overboard.
  • Don’t allow your weight loss program to become stressful. Stress causes you to lose hope and overeat as compensation.
  • Keep your plan simple so that you will be sure to achieve quick and permanent weight loss results.
  • Remember, we all have good days and bad days. Sometimes, we may even have a string of bad days where temptation and stress get the best of us.

The important thing is to remember not to panic or feel guilty. Just get yourself back on track as soon as possible.

Weight Loss Pills

By Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, ND, DACBN, DABFM

Losing weight is a lifelong commitment. It takes patience and self-discipline to stick with a weight loss program and wait for the end results. Many people want to find the magic shortcut that will make the process just a little shorter and less difficult. Many over-the-counter and prescription pills are purchased for just this purpose. They are available from pharmacies, natural health food stores, and even online. But are these weight loss pills the miracle drugs they claim to be? Or are they just a waste of money?

How Does A Weight Loss Pill Work?

Prescription weight loss pills work in one of three ways. Most of the pills on the market simply suppress the appetite and help you eat less. Others aim to increase your feeling of fullness after eating. Some of the newest weight loss pills on the market work by inhibiting the absorption of fat. Over the counter weight loss pills usually contain a stimulant that helps to decrease your appetite. The only complete weight management system which I approve of is the Slimirex® system.

Who Should Take Weight Loss Pills?

Weight loss pills are most often recommended for people who are medically obese…people whose weight is causing serious health concerns. Even with weight loss pills, the treatment of obesity involves exercise, counseling, dietary changes, and behavioral modifications. But weight loss pills are not only used by obese people. They are also sought after by people who want a quicker way to achieve the weight goals they have set for themselves. As long as men and women continue to compare themselves to the select few beautiful, skinny models on TV screens and magazine pages, there will be a strong market for weight loss pills.

Could Weight Loss Pills Be Dangerous?

Weight loss pills are a medication just like any other type of drug. You need to be very careful about the ingredients of any medication that you place in your body.

ALWAYS Consult Your Doctor

Work in consultation with your natural health care provider if you decide to try a over the counter weight loss pill to help you lose weight. Your doctor can assess your overall weight management goals and he or she can help you monitor the success or side effects of the medication. Be very cautious about the weight loss pill you decide to try. Try visiting www.weightlossobesity.com for general information and recommendations.

Know Your Source

Weight loss pills purchased over the internet may be coming from the garage of a t-shirt salesman (this actually happened!) If you decide to buy your weight loss pills online, make sure you research the company you are buying from so that you can be sure they send you the appropriate supplementation.

Read the Ingredients

Some weight loss pills contain the ingredient ephedra (also known as ephedrine and ma huang.) This stimulant has recently come under a lot of scrutiny from the Food and Drug Administration for its links to illness and side effects. Ephedra has been shown to cause heart attacks, seizures and strokes. It is a powerful and dangerous stimulant that can damage the central nervous system and the heart. The most complete system available is the Slimirex system.

Watch Out For Dependency

Weight loss pills that contain amphetamine or other stimulants may cause withdrawal symptoms when you decide to discontinue the medication. You may become addicted to these types of pills and be unable to stop taking them. The long term use of weight loss pills may increase your chances of developing serious side effects. Stimulant based weight loss pills can cause Adrenal Burnout Syndrome, which can take years to fix.

The Bottom Line On Weight Loss Pills

  • ALWAYS check with your health care provider. Make sure he or she knows which pill you are going to try and arrange for your progress to be monitored.
  • If your doctor prescribes a weight loss pill for you, make sure you follow the instructions he or she gives you. If you decide to purchase an over the counter weight loss pill, be sure to use Slimirex. DO NOT OVERDOSE to try and gain faster results.
  • Use weight loss pills (Slimirex) in combination with behavioral modifications, dietary changes, and an exercise program to ensure that if you do achieve weight loss results with the pill, you will be able to discontinue their use without hampering your progress.
  • Monitor yourself carefully while you take the weight loss pill. Record your progress as well as any side effects you may be feeling. And be sure to report both to your health care provider.
  • Unless your doctor advises you differently, plan to take the weight loss pill for a maximum of six to eight weeks. These products are not meant for long term usage and side effects can occur.
  • If you are not losing weight, stop taking the weight loss pills. Consult with your health care provider on any lifestyle or medication changes you can incorporate to achieve results.

Weight Loss Keys

By Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, ND, DACBN, DABFM

D-I-E-T…many people could not think of a more horrible word. They associate it with hunger, frustration, and ultimately failure. This one single word has stopped many people dead in the tracks. It seems many people would prefer being overweight, rather than suffering the consequences of a diet.

But a healthy diet does not mean starvation. And a healthy diet is the only one you need to follow to lose weight and keep it off. Hunger is a natural signal from the body telling us to eat. Don’t ignore it. Go ahead and eat when you are hungry. If you want to lose weight you just need to be more selective about the foods you are choosing to satisfy your hunger. Here’s how to achieve weight loss and get healthy without ever being hungry.

Eat To Lose Weight

You should never have to be hungry in order to lose weight. On the contrary, when we are hungry we tend to panic into eating whatever is in sight to protect us from starvation. Eating regular meals that leave you full and satisfied will help you stick to a healthier meal plan and reach your weight loss goals. Eat five or six small meals spaced regularly throughout the day so that you will be better able to moderate portion sizes and remain in control of what you eat. Skipping meals will slow down your metabolism and cause you to overcompensate with a larger meal later in the day. Permanent weight loss does not involve starving or deprivation, rather it involves a healthy eating plan that keeps you in control of what you put in your mouth. The best diet for weight loss is in the book by Dr. Group “Weight Loss Secrets Revealed” available at www.weightlossobesity.com

Weight Loss Tip: Slow down. We all have so many things to accomplish each day. And this busy schedule makes us eat quicker to stay ahead. Eating slowly and chewing your food 25x before you swallow will allow you stomach to signal your brain that it is full, avoiding unnecessary calories.

Think About Food

Most people think that in order to achieve permanent weight loss they need to skip meals and get their minds off of food. This is not true! When you are hungry, and you haven’t thought about what healthy food you can eat to satisfy your tummy, you will more likely grab for whatever is fastest and easiest. Most often this involves junk-food snacks like chips or pretzels or fries and burger from the drive through.

Think about what you are going to eat each day and what healthy snacks and meals you need to have ready for when hunger strikes. If you are going out to eat, think about the menu options ahead of time so that you can order your favorite healthy selection without being tempted by the other unhealthy selections on the menu.

Weight Loss Tip: If you feel hunger coming on, don’t try to put it out of your mind. Rather, think about what healthy treat you are about to enjoy!

Make Exercise Fun!

If there is any one word that could inspire as much or more fear than the word “DIET” it is probably “EXERCISE”. But exercise does not and should not have to involve hours at the gym or arduous time spent in a mindless, painful routine. People who are successful at achieving weight loss, and making it permanent, have usually found a way to make exercise a fun part of their daily activities. If you want to achieve your weight loss goals, you need to incorporate exercise into your day. And don’t be discouraged if you don’t think exercise could be fun. Its easy to make exercise so fun that you’ll look forward to doing it every day.

Weight Loss Tip: Exercise with a friend, listen to music you love, or enjoy the stress relieving qualities of fresh air on a brisk walk. Think about activities you enjoy and incorporate them into your exercise routine. There are even exercises you can do while watching TV!

Don’t Give Up Or Give In

The first thing you need to realize about losing weight is that there will be days when you simply do not want to do it. You will want to eat what you want and skip the exercise for the day. Stay committed to your goals through these tough times. Remind yourself of any small accomplishments you’ve made already and the weight loss goals you will eventually achieve. And don’t fall for the latest weight loss schemes. Weight loss takes time, but the goal is permanent. Short cuts will not get you and keep you where you want to be.

Weight Loss Tip: Look at these changes as a way to get and stay healthy while achieving permanent weight loss. Stay focused on your goals and keep a positive attitude about your progress.

Weight loss is not easy. But that doesn’t mean that it cant be fun! Enjoy your life to the fullest by taking care of yourself, eating delicious wholesome foods and making exercise an enjoyable part of your day!

Weight Loss Products and Equipment

By Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, ND, DACBN, DABFM

Weight loss is not easy. But that doesn’t mean that it can’t be fun! A healthy diet and exercise are the keys to permanent weight loss. But nobody says you can’t enjoy your life to the fullest by taking care of yourself, eating delicious wholesome foods and making exercise an enjoyable part of your day. There are plenty of fun weight loss products that can help you reach your ultimate goal. If you are ready to get started on the path to permanent weight loss, there weight loss products that might make your journey easier. Here’s a guide to the weight loss equipment you’ll want to invest in:

1. A Great Scale

Most people consider their bathroom scale to be enemy number one. But you don’t need to weigh yourself everyday in order to achieve weight loss. And you don’t need to be afraid of the numbers on your scale. Think of your scale as a guide to show you what weight loss techniques work and which ones don’t. While your scale may never be your best friend, it can be a useful weight loss product that will keep you on track and keep you honest.

2. Fun Exercise Equipment

We’ve all wasted money on thigh masters, AB rollers, and other weight loss gadgets that did nothing more than empty our wallets, and collect dust under our beds. Don’t fall for gadgets and gimmicks, but don’t skimp on buying the tools you will need to make your weight loss permanent. If you love to listen to music while you walk, buy a good portable stereo and invest in some tunes that will keep you motivated. If you prefer to exercise in front of the TV, buy a gym mat that will remind you to get moving when the commercials come on.

3. An Inspirational Weight Loss Book

There are thousands and thousands of weight loss guide books that each have their own method and regime. If you find one that works for you, great. If not, skip the guide books and look for a truly inspirational weight loss story. Ask you friends, family, and neighbors to recommend a book that would fit with your lifestyle and reading preferences. Remember, this book should not be a guide book at all, but it should be a story, fact or fiction, about someone who successfully loses weight. This story will give you inspiration when you hit a low point and it will give you motivation to envision your goals. I recommend “Weight Loss Ebook – Secrets Revealed” at Global Healing Center.

4. Dumbbells

Dumbbells may have the same status in your home as the bathroom scale or weight loss books. But these weight loss products can be a valuable tool for achieving your goals. Studies have shown that people who achieve permanent weight loss success weight train two to three days per week to maintain muscle tone and boost their metabolism. You don’t need to “feel the burn” or to become a bodybuilder. But incorporating weights into your exercise program can greatly improve your chances of achieving weight loss success.

5. An Alarm Clock

The same scientific studies that have shown that weight training is critical to permanent weight loss, also proved that people who were most successful at achieving their weight loss goals tend to get up early. You don’t have to get up at the crack of dawn, but if you are trying to squeeze in exercise at the end of the day you will often find that it simply doesn’t happen. Get up just a half hour earlier than normal and get your exercise out of the way before you have a chance to wake up and think of a reason to skip it!

Permanent weight loss is a lifelong commitment. But just as you wouldn’t want your other daily activities to be boring, a healthy diet and exercise program need to stay interesting if we are going to stay on track. Invest in weight loss products that will keep you motivated to eat healthy and exercise everyday. You’ll find that the investment pays off in dollars and in pounds!

Don’t fall for gimmicks! Here’s a few weight loss products to avoid:

  • Pills, books, and other products that promise rapid success without any lifestyle changes. There are no short cuts to healthy weight loss. There are products that can help you along the way, but be wary of any product that promises to do the work for you.
  • Weight loss Club Products: There are plenty of reputable weight loss centers and resources that offer free consultations and assistance with meal planning and exercise programs. Don’t get wedged in to a program that forces you to diet by eating only meals or services that can be purchased from them. This is not a lifelong solution to weight loss

Weight Loss Supplements

By Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, ND, DACBN, DABFM

Drugs stores and health food shops have shelves that are overflowing with weight loss supplements that claim to burn body fat, block fat absorption, inhibit carbohydrate metabolism, boost energy, suppress the appetite, flush out excess water weight, and control dietary cravings. But do these products really work as they promise? And is there any danger to giving them a try? Read on to learn more about weight loss supplements.

The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, a clearinghouse for information on natural brand-name products, lists more than fifty weight loss supplements and 125 proprietary weight loss products. According to a recent survey reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association, approximately seven percent of Americans use over the counter weight loss supplements. And of those who do use these products, almost thirty percent of them are young, overweight women.

The Risks

Some weight loss supplements help to control the appetite, but they may have serious side effects. Other can become habit forming, and still others do nothing at all. Here’s a look at the risks associated with common weight loss supplements.

Stomach Fillers: Weight loss supplements that contain bulking agents such as fiber-based products, are known as stomach fillers. These products absorb liquid and swell in the stomach, reducing the appetite. Guar gum is a common ingredient used as a stomach filler, however this ingredient can cause obstructions in the intestines, the stomach, or the esophagus. Avoid any dietary supplement that contains guar gum.

Appetite Suppressants: Some weight loss supplements are appetite suppressants, and they may contain amphetamine derivatives that are highly addictive. They also lose efficacy when used over long periods, so dieters are forced to take more and more pills to achieve results. Appetite suppressants that contain amphetamine derivatives are a high-risk method of weight loss. Some products however contained researched clinically studied mild suppressants and can be used safely such as Slimirex®.

Ephedra, also known as ma huang, is another popular appetite suppressant ingredient found in many weight loss supplements. However, in some cases Ephedra can cause heart palpitations, heart attacks, and stroke. The Food and drug Administration urges caution for anyone who is considering a weight loss supplement that contains Ephedra. People who have heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease, heart trouble, neurological disorders, diabetes, or hyperthyroidism should not use Ephedra. And completely avoid any product that contains both Ephedra and caffeine. The Food and Drug Administration considers these two ingredients to be a “deadly combination.”

Federal Regulations

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has had some success in suing the marketers of weight loss supplements that claim to burn or absorb fat. Several state attorney generals have also been involved in legal action against weight loss supplement manufacturers. In addition, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has banned over one hundred ingredients that were once commonly found in over the counter weight loss supplements. These banned ingredients include alcohol, caffeine, dextrose, and guar gum. But many federal and state regulations can do little more than work to prevent the really dangerous weight loss supplements off of the market. Unfortunately, under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, manufacturers of dietary supplements are not required to provide evidence that their products are safe or even effective. The burden rests on the FDA to prove that a product is either unsafe or ineffective.

Should You Try Them?

If you decide incorporate a weight loss supplement into your weight loss program, be sure to read all of the literature associated with the product. Carefully assess the claims and risks and understand the directions for use. And use common sense; some weight loss supplements require that you follow a very restricted low-calorie diet and exercise several times a week for full effectiveness. But these steps are likely to guarantee weight loss on their own, without the need of a weight loss supplement.

Still, there are some medical professionals that do not see harm in taking weight loss supplements that are made of safe, all-natural ingredients like Slimirex. Natural fiber supplements may be another good choice. These products may or may not leave you feeling fuller longer. But they will be effective at stimulating the digestive system, keeping waste and nutrients moving through the system, and improving regularity.

Weight Loss Diet

By Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, ND, DACBN, DABFM

D-I-E-T…most people could not think of a more vulgar four-letter word. Diet immediately brings to mind images of hunger, frustration, and ultimately failure. This one single word has stopped many people dead in their tracks. It seems many people prefer to be overweight rather than suffer the consequences of a diet.

But eating healthy does not have to involve four-letter words. You can eat healthy, delicious meals without starving and without beating yourself up. A healthy eating plan is a lifelong commitment to look and feel better, and it is the only plan you will ever need to follow to lose weight and keep it off. A healthy, balanced diet will also strengthen the immune system, reduce fatigue, lessen the side effects of certain medications, prevent constipation and other digestive disorders, and maintain the chemical balance within the body. So stop cursing and get ready to lose some weight!

It’s Time To Eat

Hunger is a natural signal from the body telling us to eat. Don’t ignore it. You should never have to be hungry in order to lose weight. On the contrary, when we are hungry we tend to panic into eating whatever is in sight to protect us from starvation. And skipping meals will slow down your metabolism and cause you to overcompensate with a larger meal later in the day. So go ahead and eat when you are hungry. Eating regular meals that leave you full and satiated will help you stick to a healthier meal plan and reach your weight loss goals. Eat five or six small meals spaced regularly throughout the day so that you will be better able to moderate portion sizes and remain in control of what you eat. If you want to lose weight you just need to be more selective about the foods you are choosing to satisfy your hunger. Permanent weight loss does not involve starving or deprivation, rather it involves a healthy eating plan that keeps you in control of what you put in your mouth.

Plan Ahead

The best way to ensure you stick with a healthy diet is to plan your meals and snacks ahead of time. Most people think that in order to achieve permanent weight loss they need to get their minds off of food. This is not true! When you are hungry, and you haven’t thought about what healthy food you can eat to satiate your tummy, you will more likely grab for whatever is fastest and easiest like chips or a fast food burger.

Think about what you are going to eat each day and what healthy snacks and meals you need to have ready for when hunger strikes. If you are going out to eat, plan ahead to make sure you choose a restaurant with a minimum amount of unhealthy temptations.

Keep It Interesting

Variety and moderation are the keys to a good diet. Try to eat a range of different selections from fresh organic fruit and vegetables and range fed meats. Remember, your body needs over forty different vitamins, minerals, and nutrients on a daily basis just to grow and function. Eating a variety of foods will help you meet these needs.

Moderation is also important, but again, this doesn’t mean that you should starve yourself. Try to eat five or six smaller meals throughout the day so that you are never hungry. And eat slowly, giving your brain enough time to recognize when you are actually full.

Don’t Give Up Or Give In

The first thing you need to realize about losing weight is that there will be days when you want to give up. Temptations are always around you and its so easy to give in to fast food drive through or an extra serving of desert. Stay committed to your goals through these tough times. Remind yourself of any small accomplishments you’ve made already and the weight loss goals you will eventually achieve. But don’t punish yourself if you do stray. If you eat right most of the time, it will more than compensate for the days when you simply cannot resist a little treat. And don’t fall for the latest weight loss schemes. Weight loss takes time, but the goal is permanent. Short cuts will not get you and keep you where you want to be.

Here’s a few more guidelines to keep in mind as you make your menu selections:

  • Use fats and oils in sparing amounts. You can still use some but try to cut back a little bit each day.
  • Avoid putting extra table salt and sugars on prepared foods.
  • Drink more water: Aim for six to eight glasses a day.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol. If you do drink, try to do so in moderate amounts.

And remember weight loss is not easy. But that doesn’t mean that it can’t be fun! Enjoy your life to the fullest by taking care of yourself, eating delicious wholesome foods and making the commitment to a healthier lifestyle.
